Three major factors influence demographics in the United States today. First, life expectancy is increasing. It is expected that the percentage of the population over age 65 will increase from approximately 12 percent in 1990 to around 18 percent in 2030 . Second, the baby boomers, individuals born between 1946 and 1970, are reaching middle age. Third, the Hispanic and black segments of the population are growing more rapidly than the remainder of the population. It is difficult to state exactly how these factors will affect individual firms and society as a whole. One can surmise, however, that the aging of the population will place increasing pressure on the social infrastructure and provide opportunities in healthcare and related industries. The growth of noncaucasian populations and the increasing number of women in the workforce raise the importance of recognizing, honoring, and managing cultural diversity.
These issues must be positively addressed by the top management of business firms, not-for-profit organizations, and government agencies.
