The influence of religion as an agent of socialization varies widely. Although most Americans identify with some organized religion, fewer than half typically attend religious services at some time during the week. Of those who do, however, many bring their children to religion classes, and some children attend religious rather than public schools. Among people who are religious, religion is a powerful agent of socialization because it specifies what is right and what is wrong. Moreover, in religious families, religion and the family frequently (though not always) give similar messages. Religion is an important influence on the values and beliefs of the parents, who join with it to pass those on to their children.

Question 2

Glaciers usually move slowly; indeed, the adjective glacial is synonymous with exceedingly slow. The movement of most glaciers can be measured in fractions of an inch per day, although an advance of several feet per day would not be unusual, and extreme examples of nearly 100 feet (30 meters) in a 24 hour period have been recorded. Also, the flow is often erratic, with irregular pulsations and surges over a short span of time. As might be expected, all parts of a glacier do not move at the same rate. The fastest moving ice is that at and near the surface, and if the glacier is confined, the way a valley glacier is, for instance, the center of the surface ice moves faster than the sides, which is similar to stream flow patterns.

  a. Glaciers always move slowly; therefore, it is difficult to judge whether it is advancing or retreating.
  b. Although glaciers move slowly, it is not unusual to find some that move as rapidly as 100 feet in a 24 hour period.
  c. The adjective glacial is synonymous with exceedingly slow which means that glaciers always move slowly under any circumstance.
  d. Glaciers usually move only fractions of an inch per day; however, they may move erratically, with some parts of the glacier moving faster than others.
