Answer to Question 1

Scientific ideas are based on data and observation. They are testable. Other forms of inquiry are based
on faith, emotion, or something else that is nontestable.

Answer to Question 2

A theory in science is a coherent explanation for one or several related natural phenomena that is
supported by a large body of objective evidence. Colloquially, theory is used to mean an idea; the
better term for that would be hypothesis.
