Answer to Question 1

Over time, a flood of that magnitude will occur every 20 years. However, two 20-year floods can
occur the same year, or none can occur for 50 years.

Answer to Question 2

Based on records of stream behavior through time, agencies determine how often a flood of a certain
size is likely to happen. For a 20-year flood, a flood of that magnitude is predicted to happen about
once every 20 years.
