Answer to Question 1

Gravity has a component that operates parallel to the slope, causing instability. Steeper slopes have a
greater component of force in that direction, and so a greater chance of mass wasting.

Answer to Question 2

Shear strength is the resisting forces that help maintain a slope's stability. Shear strength is defined by
the material's strength and cohesion, internal inter-grain friction, and its external support of the slope.
