Answer to Question 1

Loss of fertility reduces the amount of plant cover and thus increases temperature due to loss of the
cooling effects of plants and excess water. Without binding, irrigation and aeration of soil by plants,
soil becomes exposed and hardened and thus more susceptible to large losses from sheet runoff.

Answer to Question 2

Laterites are the product of intense and continual leaching of organic material and all but the most
stable elements from soils. This can occur only in warm and humid climates. Pedocals are the product
of accumulation of Ca- and Na-rich material in soils, a phenomenon that can be sustained only in the
absence of abundant water and the presence of intense evaporation.
