Answer to Question 1

Consumers can be divided into primary consumers (herbivores), omnivores, secondary consumers (carnivores), higher orders of consumers, and parasites. Primary consumers feed directly on producers. Animals that feed on primary consumers are called secondary consumers. Each level of consumer feeds on the level before. Higher-level consumers (like humans) may be found in several levels at the same time. Parasites may become associated with another plant or animal and feed on it over an extended period of time. Each organism has a place in the food web, and such predator-prey relationships help to keep the ecosystem in balance.

Answer to Question 2

There is more than enough solar energy available to supply all of our energy needs. If we could just somehow harness one single day's worth of solar energy we would be set for an entire year. Because solar energy is renewable (the Sun shines again tomorrow) it is not depleted when we use it (like fossil fuels are). Capturing and harnessing solar energy can be difficult because of cost limitations, availability of sunlight (the Sun shines for only half the day or less), and seasonal fluctuations in sunlight.

Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness. As of yet, there is no cure. Everyone is at risk, and there may be no warning signs. It is six to eight times more common in African Americans than in whites. The best and most effective way to detect glaucoma is to receive a dilated eye examination.

Although the Roman numeral for the number 4 has always been taught to have been "IV," according to historians, the ancient Romans probably used "IIII" most of the time. This is partially backed up by the fact that early grandfather clocks displayed IIII for the number 4 instead of IV. Early clockmakers apparently thought that the IIII balanced out the VIII (used for the number 8) on the clock face and that it just looked better.

There are major differences in the metabolism of morphine and the illegal drug heroin. Morphine mostly produces its CNS effects through m-receptors, and at k- and d-receptors. Heroin has a slight affinity for opiate receptors. Most of its actions are due to metabolism to active metabolites (6-acetylmorphine, morphine, and morphine-6-glucuronide).

Coca-Cola originally used coca leaves and caffeine from the African kola nut. It was advertised as a therapeutic agent and "pickerupper." Eventually, its formulation was changed, and the coca leaves were removed because of the effects of regulation on cocaine-related products.
