Answer: Sunspots appear as dark blemishes on the Sun and consist of large magnetic storms extending deep into the Sun's interior, which eject mass outward. During periods of maximum sunspot activity, the Sun emits more energy than during the minimum periods. Scientists hypothesize that minimums in sunspot activity may correspond to the Little Ice Age, when average temperatures were cooler.
