Answer to Question 1

Answer: 1) Rate of glacial movement, 2) thickness of glacial ice, 3) shape, abundance, and hardness of rock fragments at the base of the glacial, and 4) erodibility of bedrock beneath the glacier.

Answer to Question 2

Answer: Ice in the upper 50 m of a glacier is cold and brittle, hence the breakage. However, below that point, the ice is under a great deal of pressure. This pressure allows the ice to move in a ductile manner, which seals off any fractures.
