Answer to Question 1

Answer: A seismograph has a freely suspended weight that is connected to a support attached to bedrock. When seismic waves arrive and the earth moves, the rest of the seismograph will move, but inertia will keep the weight relatively stationary, allowing it to record the seismic data.

Answer to Question 2

Answer: Differential stress builds up on both sides of a fault. Frictional force between the fault blocks keeps the rocks in place. Over time, this force causes the rock to bend, much the way a diving board will bend under a person's weight. Eventually, the stress along the fault overcomes the friction holding rocks in place and slip begins, allowing the deformed rock to snap back to its original shape.
