Examine the photo at the beginning of this chapter. Describe the natural and human-created features visible in the photo and relate them to stream processes.

What will be an ideal response?

Question 2

Using Figure 16.17, list the stream properties that increase with downstream distance and those that decrease.

Then, explain which properties are most responsible for the increase in sediment load with downstream distance and the decrease in the grain size of the sediment load with downstream distance.
What will be an ideal response?

Answer to Question 1

The stream has a natural, curving channel pattern with in-channel bars that describe it as a braided river. A natural floodplain is recognized by the vegetated and apparently uninhabited areas immediately adjacent to the channel. Stream canyons are visible in the mountains in the background, along with some alluvial fans along the base of the mountains. The area mostly looks like a dry desert except for the farm fields near the river. These fields show the human impact of diverting river water for irrigation; an unnaturally straight irrigation channel runs along the right side of the floodplain.

Answer to Question 2

Stream Properties That Increase with Downstream Distance
Discharge
Sediment load
Channel width
Channel depth
Flow velocity

Stream Properties That Decrease with Downstream Distance
Grain size of bedload
Elevation of channel bed
Slope of channel bed
Stream power
Shear stress
