Answer to Question 1

Immature soils have no B horizon or a very thin B horizon. Older soils have had time to accumulate minerals and develop thick B horizons, as water impacts deeper into the regolith. Also, older soils have proportionately more clay in the B horizons, and less easily weathered material.

Answer to Question 2

The best way to reduce erosion on disturbed slopes is to terrace the slope to slow down the flow of water. Plants should be planted along contours of slopes. Alternating crops aids in soil replenishment and a crop such as hay can provide cover of the entire field. Windbreaks are key to slowing wind erosion.
