Answer to Question 1

Erosion is caused by water and wind, and it removes the soil essential for farming. Soil is washed or blown away most readily on bare fields that are allowed to lie fallow for some part of the year.

Answer to Question 2

Mature soils need time to develop, thus they must remain undisturbed. Thinnest soils develop on slopes. Thin soils indicate a change in landscape and a high rate of erosion.
