Answer to Question 1

Plants typically cannot extract nutrients directly from the minerals in rocks or regolith. The parent material must undergo chemical weathering to make the chemical components available to plants.

Answer to Question 2

Sedimentary layers form by deposition of one layer on top of another. Soil horizons form in place.
