The density of oceanic lithosphere must be higher than the density of asthenosphere in order for plates to subduct. If the lithosphere is denser than the asthenosphere, it will be possible for the lithosphere to sink (subduct). If the lithosphere is less dense than the asthenosphere, it will float on the asthenosphere and will not be able to sink.
