Answer: Water and melting snow add lubricating moisture and weight to the sediments on a hillside. The weight increases the magnitude of the gravity driving force for slope failure.

Answer: Clay-rich siltstone, mudstone, and weathered basalt. In San Mateo County, about half of the hillsides underlain by mostly clay-rich siltstone and mudstone or weathered basalt have possibly, probably, or definitely slid in the past.
