Answer to Question 1

ANS: A
In 2011, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) proposed an updated definition that was designed to improve the reporting criteria for VAP used by institutions. Although the CDC surveillance definition incorporates the general features of the ATS/IDSA definition, several points are noteworthy. The CDC surveillance defi-nition relies on the use of only objective data, clearly defined time criteria, and the exclusion of radiographic imaging to diagnose the presence of pneumonia in ventilated patients.

Answer to Question 2

ANS: B
A patient who is semiasleep but responds to verbal commands would be given a score of 3 on the Ramsay Sedation Scale.
