Answer to Question 1

ANS: C
Like the nose, a heat and moisture exchanger captures exhaled heat and moisture and uses it to heat and humidify the next inspiration.

Answer to Question 2

ANS: B
A membrane-type humidifier separates the water from the gas stream by means of a hydrophobic membrane (Figure 38-3). Water vapor molecules can easily pass through this membrane, but liq-uid water (and pathogens) cannot. As with the wick-type humidifier, bubbling does not occur. Moreover, if a membrane-type humidifier were to be inspected while it was in use, no liquid wa-ter would be seen in the humidifier chamber.

People who have myopia, or nearsightedness, are not able to see objects at a distance but only up close. It occurs when the cornea is either curved too steeply, the eye is too long, or both. This condition is progressive and worsens with time. More than 100 million people in the United States are nearsighted, but only 20% of those are born with the condition. Diet, eye exercise, drug therapy, and corrective lenses can all help manage nearsightedness.

It is believed that the Incas used anesthesia. Evidence supports the theory that shamans chewed cocoa leaves and drilled holes into the heads of patients (letting evil spirits escape), spitting into the wounds they made. The mixture of cocaine, saliva, and resin numbed the site enough to allow hours of drilling.

Hippocrates noted that blood separates into four differently colored liquids when removed from the body and examined: a pure red liquid mixed with white liquid material with a yellow-colored froth at the top and a black substance that settles underneath; he named these the four humors (for blood, phlegm, yellow bile, and black bile).
