In the lateral nasopharynx, there are two openings into the left and right eustachian tubes that link the upper airway with the middle ear (Figure 9-36). The eustachian tubes drain fluid out of the middle ear and allow gas to move in or out of the middle to equalize pressure on either side of the tympanic membrane.
