Answer to Question 1

Suggested Response: Mrs. Evansmight begin by introducing the concept of self-regulated learning. She might conduct class discussions about the meaning of self-regulation and give examples. Some of the examples could probably be drawn from her students.
As a model, Mrs. Evans could use the cycle of self-regulated learning.
1 . Analyze the learning task. Teach students to ask questions and make sure they clearly understand the task. When they have doubts or lack knowledge and information, they may ask for help.
2 . Set learning goals and devise plans to reach them. Students can learn to set their own goals for learning tasks. Goal setting includes things like what resources to use, how to gather information, what steps to take, the amount of time they will spend, the level of detail expected, and the order in which to approach the steps of a task. They can learn to make plans and monitor their time and resources to reach their goals.
3 . Enact strategies to accomplish the task. Their strategies may include things such as making a list or outlining steps to be completed, taking notes, organizing information, recognizing information overload, and checking their understanding against that of peers.
4 . Regulate learning by reflecting on the process. Students can learn to reflect on their progress and decide whether they need to change their goals and plans or change their strategies to succeed. They can consider ways to keep from being distracted and ways to make the task more efficient.
Mrs. Evans might model the stages of the cycle of self-regulated learning and ask students to look for examples they see in people around them  at home, at school, and in the community.
Then she might coach the students to be intentional in practicing the cycle of self-regulated learning. Throughout the year she might remind students of these self-regulatory skills and keep the stages posted in the classroom.
