Answer to Question 1

ANS: B
Pulse oximeters use spectrophotometry to determine the amount of hemoglobin in a blood sam-ple. They use optical plethysmography to estimate the heart rate by measuring cyclic changes in light transmission through the sample site during each cardiac cycle.

Answer to Question 2

ANS: B
The presence of bilirubin in quantities greater than 20 mg/dL of whole blood can alter measure-ments because it absorbs near-infrared (IR) and IR light. Absorbance of light by bilirubin lowers the actual O2Hb measured.

Dogs have been used in studies to detect various cancers in human subjects. They have been trained to sniff breath samples from humans that were collected by having them breathe into special tubes. These people included 55 lung cancer patients, 31 breast cancer patients, and 83 cancer-free patients. The dogs detected 54 of the 55 lung cancer patients as having cancer, detected 28 of the 31 breast cancer patients, and gave only three false-positive results (detecting cancer in people who didn't have it).
