Answer to Question 1

ANS: B
The balloon lumen is used to inflate the balloon; this is done during insertion of the catheter and measurement of wedge pressure. The distal lumen is positioned in a branch of the pulmonary ar-tery; it is used to measure pulmonary artery pressure, pulmonary artery occlusion pressure, and to obtain mixed venous blood sample. The proximal lumen is positioned in the right atrium and is used to measure central venous pressure. The thermodilution lumen is used to measure cardiac output.

Answer to Question 2

ANS: A
Capillary blood samples from an earlobe or the side of the heel can be substituted when arterial blood cannot be obtained, although the results may vary considerably from arterial blood gas values.
