Answer to Question 1

ANS: C
The atrioventricular valves close at the beginning of ventricular systole. See Figure 9-22.

Answer to Question 2

ANS: C
As the impulse travels through the atrioventricular node, there is a 100-ms delay in conduction. This delay is important because it allows the atria to become fully depolarized and contract be-fore ventricular excitation begins. This allows the atria to contract and empty, which has been dubbed atrial kick, contributing to optimal ventricular filling.

There are major differences in the metabolism of morphine and the illegal drug heroin. Morphine mostly produces its CNS effects through m-receptors, and at k- and d-receptors. Heroin has a slight affinity for opiate receptors. Most of its actions are due to metabolism to active metabolites (6-acetylmorphine, morphine, and morphine-6-glucuronide).
