Inductive plethysmography is based on the principle that the respiratory system moves with 2 degrees of freedom. That is, it consists of two moving parts: the rib cage and the abdomen. Dur-ing inspiration, the rib cage moves outward as the lungs expand in the thorax. Simultaneously, the abdomen is displaced outward by the downward movement of the diaphragm.
