Answer to Question 1

B
A patient with atelectasis will have a decreased IC (inspiratory capacity) and VC (vital capacity) because there is less air in the lungs to blow out. The PEFR (peak expiratory flow rate) and DLCO (diffusion of lung carbon monoxide) values will also be decreased.

Answer to Question 2

B
A PaO2 of 40 to 70 mm Hg is normal for newborn infants. No effort should be made to get an infant's PaO2 within the normal adult range (80 to 100 mm Hg).
