Answer to Question 1

Keep a safe distance between yourself and the person. Always be aware of your surroundings. Be alert for items that can be used as weapons. Avoid wearing your stethoscope around your neck. Do not let the person get between you and the exit. Call for help. Do not try to handle the situation yourself.

Answer to Question 2

Hepatitis A is contagious. A vaccine is available and health care workers are at high risk so should be vaccinated. It is your responsibility to protect yourself and others by practicing Standard Precautions, the Bloodborne Pathogen Standard, and proper hand hygiene. The environment should be properly sanitized and incontinence products disposed of properly. Assist the patient with hand hygiene as well.
