The associate degree RN or LPN with an associate degree in another field can often obtain a bachelor's degree in nursing in less time than the usual required 4 years. Some nursing programs enroll students who have a bachelor's degree in a major other than nursing. In these programs, graduates are eligible to take the RN licensure examination after a shorter period of time because they have already taken their general liberal arts courses. Therefore, the student is not required to repeat many of the courses typically offered in the first 2 years of study and can focus primarily on clinical courses. These accelerated RN courses usually last about 2 years. In some specialized courses, the graduate receives a master's degree, in addition to the RN. Teaching usually requires at least a master's degree, but the nurse may begin teaching in some programs with a baccalaureate degree, while working on an advanced degree.
