Answer to Question 1

In positive transfer, something learned at one time facilitates learning or performance at a later time. In negative transfer, something learned at one time interferes with learning or performance at a later time. The response should illustrate each of these concepts with a concrete example.

Answer to Question 2

a. Because working memory capacity is limited, students can consider only so many aspects of a problem at once. When a problem is complex and multifaceted, students may have difficulty keeping all of its components in mind simultaneously. The response should illustrate the effects of working memory capacity with a concrete example.
b. How students represent a problem in memory (e.g., the interpretations they impose on the problem) affects the strategies they bring to bear on the problem and the possible solutions they consider. The response should illustrate the effects of representation with a concrete example.
c. Problem solving success depends on whether students retrieve essential information from long-term memory. The response should illustrate the effects of retrieval with a concrete example.
