It is the beginning of the school day. Students in Mr. McGlinn's chemistry class enter the room. Without being told, they turn in any homework, sit in their assigned seats, get out their textbooks and notebooks, and copy the outline for the day's lesson from the board. All this is done with a minimum of talking and students are seated and ready for class to begin when the bell rings. It is clear that

  a. the students are aware of class rules and consequences, so they are compliant.
  b. Mr. McGlinn has effectively implemented a specific set of procedural expectations.
  c. these students are exceptionally mature and are thus unlikely to give Mr. McGlinn any discipline problems throughout the school year.
  d. Mr. McGlinn is closely supervising the students, which explains why they are compliant.
