For deep vein thrombosis (DVT) prophylaxis, antiembolic stockings or sequential compression devices should be worn by the patient during and after the surgical procedure in addition to anticoagulant therapy.

Thrombolytic therapy can use streptokinase, urokinase, or tissue-type plasminogen activator to dissolve or loosen a clot. Most clots break up within 24 hours.
