A sentinel node biopsy is done by injecting a radioisotope into the breast mass several hours before the surgical procedure. The patient then comes to the OR where the tumor is injected with a dye containing isosulfan blue that is taken up by the lymph nodes of the breast.

The open abdominal approach involves a muscle-splitting incision in the right lower quadrant, over McBurney's point.
