Self-retaining retractors are placed into the wound and kept open by ratchets or spring locks, rather than surgical team members.

The finishes of some portions of the microinstruments exposed to light in the surgical field are deliberately dulled to reduce glare. Some titanium microinstruments have a dull blue finish. Some ebonized black finish can also eliminate glare.
