Because children do not have the independence or the developmental level of adults or adolescents, mania presents differently in the very young and is often misdiagnosed as hyperactivity and ADHD. Experts suggest that the two conditions can be differentiated when hyperactive symptoms are episodic with intervening normal behavior (more common in mania than in ADHD) and when school performance is overall good (more common in mania).
