The first step to preventing burnout is to maintain one's sense of personal power. Martin (2002) defined personal power as one's ability to control one's actions. Nurses can develop personal power by having an attitude of openness in their own lives, actualizing themselves as models of physical and emotional health, and serving as an example to others.
