Answer to Question 1

B
Nursing care of suicidal patients should initially be directed toward protection, increasing patient self-esteem, and helping patients to become aware of their feelings, to label them, and to express them appropriately.

Answer to Question 2

A
The development of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has been observed in some patients who have been on mechanical ventilation devices for long periods of time. This experience may be very frightening for the client, in that there is a sensation of isolation and the client is unable to normally communicate with his or her family and the health care providers as a result of the ventilator. Nurses have sometimes referred to this as ICU syndrome.
