Chronic abusers of opiates may go through protracted symptoms for up to 6 months. The first phase of withdrawal includes the acute symptoms and is over in a few days. The second phase may last for 6 months and include symptoms of vague malaise, depression, changes in appetite, and measurable differences in temperature and respirations.
