The NIOSH report found that 18,000 people are assaulted at their place of work. Each year around 20 workers are killed in the workplace. Studies have found documented assaults on hospital staff by patients and families. Other studies have found the many workers experience both physical and emotional harassment. A study from an inner-city hospital in Vancouver, British Columbia, found that 57 of the staff had been physically assaulted by patients or accompanying visitors or family members.
