Answer to Question 1

B
Maturational crises occur when a person arrives at a new stage of development and finds that old
coping styles are ineffective but has not yet developed new strategies. Option A: Situational crises
arise from sources external to the individual, such as divorce and job loss. Option C: No
classification called reactive crisis exists. Option D: Adventitious crises occur when disasters such
as natural disasters (e.g., floods, hurricanes), war, or violent crimes disrupt coping.

Answer to Question 2

ANS: A
The scores on the Life-Changing Events Questionnaire are the following: A, 151; B, 58; C, 100; and
D, 95 . The higher the score, the greater the stress placed on the individual. In addition, women
assess and react to life stress events at a higher level than men. Men tend to underrate life change
units by approximately 17. Even when adjustments are made to the scores of the men, A still rates
highest.
