Answer to Question 1

Americans use slashes to indicate month/day/year, but in many other parts of the world, slashes represent day/month/year. Using slashes may confuse some members of the audience.

Answer to Question 2

Eliminate unnecessary details, always show scale, provide a legend when necessary, and always indicate north.
