Answer to Question 1

Red tears are caused by porphyrin, a substance secreted by the Harderian gland when the animal is stressed or ill.

Answer to Question 2

When wet, cedar releases toxic fumes which can cause respiratory problems, sometimes resulting in death of the animal.
