Answer to Question 1

. Incorporation of residues. Herbage and roots from native vegetation and previous crops are incorporated into the soil to increase their rate of decay. When perennial crop fields are converted to annual crops, tillage provides for the burying of plant residue.
. Control of crop pests like diseases, insects, and weeds. Diseases and insects that live or survive in crop residues can often be destroyed by incorporation of the residue. Tillage can also be used to control annual and perennial weeds prior to planting.
. Incorporation of manures, fertilizers, and lime into the root zone of the plant.
. Preparation of a seedbed to accommodate seeding equipment.
. Alteration of physical conditions and temperature of the soil. Tillage can reduce soil compaction and mix soils.
