Some of the advantages are improved soil workability that allows earlier and more timely field operations; increased productivity of crops due to increase oxygen; reduced incidence of fungal crop disease; decreased methane production; and removal of excess soil salts.

Disadvantages include increased nutrient and pesticide leaching; loss of wildlife habitat; installing tile can be costly and is highly regulated; increased soil organic matter loss; and increased flooding in rivers to which drainage flows.
