Answer to Question 1

The way that leaves are arranged on a plant provides further clues for identification through
classification. Some plants have leaves placed opposite from each other. Others have alternating
arrangements, while others are grouped or whorled. These subtle but helpful differences can be quite
helpful to identify and distinguish plant materials if noted when learning about a plant that is new to
you.

Answer to Question 2

Knowledge of scientific names lessens the chances of ordering the wrong plant materials. Plants
cannot be returned to a grower. Incorrect ordering wastes product, time, fuel, and labor. Knowledge of
scientific names also sets plant professionals apart in the marketplace because their background
knowledge inspires client trust.
