Answer to Question 1

A purebred swine operation is responsible for producing high-quality boars and gilts for feeder-pig
operations and purebred stock for other purebred farms. They contribute much to the genetic
improvement of swine.

Answer to Question 2

U.S. breeds of cattle were developed out of necessity. To grow beef cattle in the South and Southwest,
heat tolerance and disease and parasite resistance were a must. To develop cattle that met these
requirements and still had desirable meat quality, breeders crossed Brahman cattle from India with the
English breeds. Examples of the American breeds of beef are Brangus, Beefmaster, Santa Gertrudis,
and Barzona.
