Answer to Question 1

To shorten the time to seedling emergence; to improve stand uniformity, which means
to improve the number of uniform plants that survive in a given row; and to overcome
potentially adverse conditions in the seedbed (for example, improper temperature or
moisture in the soil).

Answer to Question 2

Damping-off is a fungal disease that causes the stems to rot at the soil line. Two ways to
control damping-off are to use proper sanitation practices and avoid warm, wet
medium.
