Answer to Question 1

Ask students for their own opinion. Encourage them to think about the cost of metric
conversion and the trade advantages that would offset the cost.

Answer to Question 2

Many former British colonies do not use the metric system outside of science and
engineering. Most commercially available products are still produced using British
units of measurement. The need for conversion factors between the U.S. Customary
system and metric units complicates trading between countries that use the metric
system and countries that use the U.S. Customary system. Retooling factories in
countries where the U.S. Customary system is used for metric conversion would be
very expensive.

Answer to Question 3

The greatest advantage of the metric system is that the metric system is based on
units of 10. This simplifies the mathematical interconversion between units of
measurement for length, mass, and volume
