Answer to Question 1

To prepare the soil for bramble fruit planting, begin 1 or 2 years in advance by plowing
under green manure crops or animal manure to build up the organic matter level of the
soil. The year the plants are to be set, plow the soil to a depth of 7 to 9 inches. Condition
the soil by harrowing to break up all large clods and to level the soil surface. Perform a
soil test and apply lime or phosphorus and potash fertilizer as needed, but do each
application separately.

Answer to Question 2

The five key points to consider when selecting a site for planting of bramble fruits
include a site that:
 Offers good air circulation
Has elevation higher than surrounding area or with a slight slope
Has no wild raspberry and blackberry plants
Is at least 1,000 feet from black raspberries
Has not been previously planted with potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, or
tobacco in the last 4 or 5 years
Answers will vary about which site requirement is the most important
