 Plants may be sold and transplanted year-round.
 More plants can be grown in the same area, thus reducing cost
 Plants have more uniform plant growth.
 Plants require no digging or balling
 Plants grown in sterile medium experience fewer pests and diseases
 The cost to produce a plant to marketable size is lower
Students should discuss at least four of the following disadvantages of growing plants in
containers:
 The initial cost of getting established is higher
 Personnel must be trained in potting technique, and watering becomes a more
precise growth factor in container growing
 More water is required because the plants cannot tap soil reserves
 If plants are overwintered, some protection must be provided where temperatures
fall much below freezing


Transplanting to the landscape is more difficult for some plants
 If left in containers too long, plants develop a circular, pot-bound root system
