Extensive paving, raised planters, groundcover in lieu of grass, automatic irrigation, limited number of plants, low-maintenance plants, flowering shrubs in place of perennial and annual flowers, insect and disease-resistant plants

Scrape a tiny area of the bark with your fingernail and check for green color underneath.
