What will happen to sod that is not laid immediately but instead is left in a pile?

Mulching is used to prevent weed seeds from germinating. Why then is it recommended to mulch germinating grass seed?

Answer to Question 1

It will generate heat and develop disease problems and deteriorate or die.

Answer to Question 2

Light mulching in which the surface is barely covered will keep the soil moist for the germinating grass seed, stop erosion during watering, and also prevent it from washing away..
